Reflexions: Letting the Ancestors Rest

It must have been about a decade ago when me and my housemate at the time, would go for long walks in the evenings through the uoft campus and take our time getting to know each other while admiring the flowers, plants and architecture of the buildings. It was during that time that I experienced the first close death of a relative, my grandmother Irma Cortes had passed. This womxn was legendary. Virgo Sun, Cancer Moon and Venus. She had 11 children and single handedly raised them all by working very hard and lived a long fulfilling life. I had the privilege of spending lots of time with my Abuelita Irma at different points throughout her life and have so many precious memories with her. Some of the most beautiful memories I have with her are getting taught how to sow by her by fixing a hole in a sock, or getting to spend time with her closer to the end of her life when she had already lost some mental clarity and would behave like a child. I’ll never forget how on one of those nights when I had received the news that my grandma Irma was parting, that I felt her spirit manifest through a tall sweet chestnut tree. Those were my late college years and yes, I was doing more drugs than I would now lol nonetheless, it felt very significant and special, to find solace in a tree during the death of a loved one. Being able to hug and give offerings to this tree became a regular thing in my life for the years that followed. In 2021 I made a post about the beautiful mural an indigenous artist had painted around a protective wall they had built around her.

During the decade that, I lived in the Kensington market area and would frequent other parks in search of some peaceful time in nature. I fell in love with other trees, during the plandemic I lost my second grandmother, mi abuelita Dina Morales. She was such a unique being. She was a lover of animals and always had lots of pets. Her house was always full of decorations and plants everywhere you would look. She was also a very mystical person and loved talking about spirits and the spiritual realm. I learned to trust my intuition thanks to her. This womxn’s ascension was one of the toughest experiences I’ve had to go through. My mother’s mother. Not being able to be there and being so affected by quarantine and everything that was happening. I am still processing and mourning her passing on to this day. When that happened, I felt her presence appear as two huge oak trees, side by side, in queen’s park. It was very significant that she would appear in twos as she was a Pisces and loved the concept of duality. That night felt magical, it was a foggy late spring evening, the dew over the tall grass was glistening and the whole place looked ethereal. Feeling her love come through these tall trees was what I needed at that moment and I remember how it brought me to tears for what felt like such a needed release.

Sometimes people ask me how it is that I have so much trust and conviction in what I do. I think it’s by knowing that there’s so much more than meets the eye. Feeling someone’s love, from someone who is no longer with us shows how powerful love is, how it defies any limitations and pierces through time and space. I have felt my ancestors appear before me in different forms and felt them with me in different situations. Having the assurance that they are here with me, and that they are looking over me, is what has allowed me to come to this point where I get to enjoy my life and feel fulfilled. Nevertheless, life always has new lessons, more complex and special experiences for us to teach us how to receive and give more love. So I kid you not when I tell you that what I experienced recently made me very sad and upset. It was over a year ago that I moved away from my old neighbourhood. I moved about 45 minutes away in the opposite direction, in the east end of Toronto, not only because it is much more affordable but also because I needed a break from that area. It started to feel like everything was triggering me or bringing me back to past experiences. Re-living past traumas because I was frequenting the same spaces where I had lived a lot of hardship. Starting anew with my own apartment in a completely different area felt exciting and refreshing. This past year I’ve been able to travel as well which has been such a blessing, as I finally got to see my family and finally mourn our matriarch together. All this to say I hadn’t been able to go back and bring offerings for my trees until recently when I got a job in my old area and started taking the same routes I used too, this time with a fresh mindset. It was with great paint in my heart that I found out they had cut down two of the three trees I used to visit. I was so sad and upset, I didn’t know what to think or do about it, I only knew I felt sad and upset. I wanted to write a letter to uoft and complain about how they had cut down such a beautiful sweet chestnut tree and built a stage over it. I mean in 2023 should we really be out here chopping trees down or should we bne planting and growing more of them? But then I thought, maybe the tree was dying or needed to be cut down? That’s what happened to one of the oak trees in queen’s park. That was the first one I saw that got cut down. And although it did make me sad, I soon realized that the tree was probably dying and rotting from the inside when I remembered it had grown a big beautiful iridescent chicken of the woods mushroom during last fall. Trees usually grow large mushrooms like that when part of them or all of them is dying. It would’ve been unfortunate if the tree had rotted and broken apart potentially falling over someone or something on the street. The tree getting cut down was understandable but my anger and sadness was still there with me to deal with. It’s been a couple of weeks now and it’s dawned on me that these past few years were very challenging and that we were working over-time mentally, spiritually, emotionally, and so were our ancestors - guiding us through these difficult times. But as life would have it, now it’s time to give them some space. We are stronger now. In many ways, we are them. In their teachings, lessons, memories and experiences. If there’s anything these past few years have taught us is that we are capable of overcoming anything. Now we are more experienced and wiser and it’s time for us to hone into our confidence and trust ourselves. The ancestors need time to rest, they deserve to sleep and continue their journey through the waters of unconditional love until they return to the very source of life itself. We are here and are more than capable. We are the ancient ones, we are our ancestors in their teachings, in their love and memories and we must continue to honour them and ourselves by taking full charge over our lives and being fully present in the now and open and receptive to more and new forms of love.

Fue hace como una década cuando con la amiga con la que vivía nos dábamos unos paseos largos en las noches de verano por el campus de uoft. Dándonos el tiempo para conocernos mientras mirábamos las flores, las plantas y la arquitectura de los edificios. Fue durante ese tiempo que viví la primera muerte cercana de un familiar, había fallecido mi abuela Irma Cortés. Esta mujer era legendaria. Sol en Virgo, Luna y Venus en Cáncer. Tuvo 11 hijxs y los crió a todos sola y trabajando muy duro. Aun así ella pudo vivir una vida larga y satisfactoria. Tuve el privilegio de pasar mucho tiempo con mi Abuelita Irma en diferentes momentos de su vida y tengo tantos recuerdos preciosos con ella. Algunos de los recuerdos más hermosos que tengo con ella son cuando me enseñó a coser cerrando un hoyo de un calcetín, o el pasar tiempo con ella más cerca del final de su vida cuando ya había perdido algo de claridad mental y se comportaba como una niñita. Nunca olvidaré cómo una de esas noches en que recibí la noticia de que mi abuela Irma había fallecido, sentí que su espíritu se manifestaba a través de un arbol castaño alto y bello. Esos fueron mis últimos años en la universidad y sí, estaba consumiendo más drogas de las que tomaría ahora jajaja Sin embargo, se sintió muy significativo y especial encontrar consuelo en un árbol durante la muerte de un ser querido. Poder abrazar y dar ofrendas a este árbol se convirtió en algo habitual en mi vida durante los años siguientes. En 2021 hice una publicación sobre el hermoso mural que un artista indígena había pintado alrededor de un muro protector que habían construido a su alrededor.

Durante la década que viví en el área cercana al mercado de Kensington y frecuentaba otros parques en busca de un momento de paz en la naturaleza. Me enamoré de otros árboles. Durante la plandemia perdí a mi segunda abuela, mi abuelita Dina Morales. Ella era un ser tan único. Era amante de los animales y siempre tuvo muchas mascotas. Su casa siempre estaba llena de adornos y plantas por todas partes. También era una persona muy mística y le encantaba hablar sobre espíritus y el reino espiritual. Aprendí a confiar en mi intuición gracias a ella. El ascenso de esta mujer fue una de las experiencias más duras por las que he tenido que pasar. La madre de mi madre. No poder estar ahí y estar tan afectado por la cuarentena y todo lo que estaba sucediendo. Todavía estoy procesando y viviendo el luto de su fallecimiento. Cuando falleció, sentí que su presencia apareció como dos enormes robles, uno al lado del otro, en Queen's Park. Fue muy significativo que ella apareciera de a dos, ya que era una Piscis y amaba el concepto de dualidad. Esa noche fue sintió mágica, era una tarde de primavera con niebla, las gotitas de agua sobre la hierba alta brillaba y todo el lugar parecía un sueño. Sentir su amor venir a través de estos árboles altos era lo que necesitaba en ese momento y recuerdo cómo lloré esa noche, lo que se sintió como una liberación muy necesaria en el momento.

A veces la gente me pregunta cómo es que tengo tanta confianza y convicción en lo que hago. Creo que sabiendo que hay mucho más de lo que uno puede ver es esencial. Sentir el amor de alguien, de alguien que ya no está con nosotres, muestra cuán poderoso es el amor. Cómo desafía cualquier limitación y atraviesa el tiempo y el espacio. He sentido a mis ancestros aparecer ante mí de diferentes maneras y los he sentido conmigo en diferentes situaciones. Tener la seguridad de que están aquí conmigo y que me están cuidando es lo que me ha permitido llegar a este punto en el que puedo disfrutar de mi vida y sentirme realizade. Sin embargo, la vida siempre tiene nuevas lecciones, experiencias más complejas y especiales para enseñarnos a recibir y dar más amor. Así que no bromeo cuando te digo que lo que viví recientemente me puso muy triste y molesto. Hace más de un año que me mudé de mi antiguo barrio. Me mudé a unos 45 minutos en dirección opuesta, en el extremo este de Toronto, no solo porque es mucho más económico sino también porque necesitaba un descanso de esa zona. Empecé a sentir que todo me estaba provocando o me traía de vuelta a experiencias pasadas. Sentí que revivía traumas pasados al frecuentar los mismos espacios donde había vivido cosas duras. Comenzar de nuevo en mi propio apartamento en un área completamente diferente se sintió excitante y refrescante. El año pasado también pude viajar, lo que ha sido una gran bendición, ya que finalmente pude ver a mi familia y poder sentir el luto juntes de nuestra gran matriarca. Es por eso que no había podido ir a ver a entregar ofrendas a mis árboles hasta hace poco, cuando conseguí un trabajo en mi barrio antiguo y comencé a tomar las mismas rutas que antes tomaba, esta vez con una nueva mentalidad. Fue con gran tristeza en mi corazón que descubrí que habían cortado dos de los tres árboles que solía visitar. Estaba tan triste y molesto que no sabía qué pensar o hacer al respecto, solo sabía que me sentía triste y molesto. Pensé en escribirle una carta a uoft y quejarme de cómo habían talado un castaño dulce tan hermoso y habían construido un escenario sobre él? Osea, en 2023, no deberíamos realmente estar plantando árboles en vez de estar cortándolos? Pero luego pensé, tal vez el árbol se estaba muriendo o necesitaba ser cortado? Eso es lo que le pasó a uno de los robles en Queen’s Park. Ese fue el primero que vi que habían cortado. Y aunque me entristeció, me di cuenta de que el árbol probablemente se estaba muriendo y pudriendo por dentro cuando recordé que había le había crecido un hongo grande y hermoso iridiscente durante el otoño pasado. Los árboles suelen producir hongos grandes como esos cuando parte de ellos o todo se está muriendo. Hubiera sido desafortunado que el árbol se hubiera podrido y roto y caído sobre alguien o algo en la calle. Era comprensible que talaran el árbol, pero mi ira y mi tristeza todavía estaban conmigo. Han pasado un par de semanas y me he dado cuenta de que estos últimos años fueron muy desafiantes y que estábamos trabajando mucho mental, espiritual y emocionalmente, al igual que nuestros antepasados, guiándonos a través de estos tiempos difíciles. Pero como es la vida, ahora es el momento de darles algo de espacio. Somos más fuertes ahora. En muchos sentidos, somos ellos. En sus enseñanzas, lecciones, recuerdos y experiencias. Si algo nos han enseñado estos últimos años es que somos capaces de superar cualquier cosa. Ahora tenemos más experiencia, somos más sabios y es hora de que tengamos confianza en nosotres mismes. Los ancestros necesitan tiempo para descansar, merecen dormir y continuar su viaje por las aguas del amor incondicional hasta regresar a la fuente misma de la vida. Estamos aquí y somos más que capaces. Somos los antiguos, somos nuestros ancestros en sus enseñanzas, en su amor y recuerdos, y debemos continuar honrándolos a elles y a nosotres mismes haciéndonos cargo de nuestras vidas y estando completamente presentes en el aquí y el ahora, y abiertos y receptivos a más y nuevas formas de dar y recibir amor.
