ASTRO-Encyclopedia

INTRO / Disclaimer

This is a general compilation of definitions for the different elements that constitute astrological charts and chart readings. All of this information has been pulled from the internet mixed with personal editions. I don't claim ownership over any of this information and don't aim to make any profit. My only wish to share and allow it to serve as a tool to those who are interested in learning how to read charts. So please use as you wish.

Astrological chart readings are an art and just like any art form there are an infinite amount of ways to read them from styles to methods on how to interpret each element. If there is somewhat of a concensus on chart reading interpretations and definitions in western culture, I've made an attempt to put the general aspects together. Here is what I've been able to put together so far.

Rising

ASTRO Chart

RISING SIGN

(Ascendant & Chart Ruler)

In astrology, your chart ruler is the planet that rules over your rising sign. Also known as the ascendant, your rising sign is the zodiac sign that rose over the eastern horizon when you were born. The ascendant represents how others see you or the mask you wear in public.

LUMINARIES

The luminaries were what traditional astrologers called the two astrological "planets" which were the brightest and most important objects in the heavens, that is, the Sun and the Moon. Luminary means, source of light.

Sun ☀️

The Sun tells us of the actual core of a person, the inner self, of that which is of central concern. It also shows us the general vitality and the ability to assert oneself, it describes a general tone of being which colors everything else.

Sign Equivalent: Leo ♌︎ | Period: 365.25 Days

Moon 🌑 🌒 🌓 🌔 🌕 🌖 🌗 🌘

The Moon represents our feelings and emotions, the receptivity, imagination and basic feeling tone of a person. It also has an effect on the sense of rhythm, time and timing, it influences our adaptability to change, our mobility and versatility.

Sign Equivalent: Cancer ♋︎ | Period: 27.32 Days

PLANETS

Personal planets, also called “inside planets,” are those that are closer to Earth and change zodiac signs frequently, meaning that they have a larger impact on our personalities and they vary from person to person. Personal planets include the sun, the moon, Mercury, Venus, and Mars, and affect peoples’ day-to-day lives. A lot of times they may point to a literal event happening in your life.

Generational planets, also called “outer planets,” are further away from us, move more slowly. Generational planets are planets are Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto, and they more so reflect societal goings-on, and events that will impact entire communities of people rather than just you.

Mercury

Mercury represents reason, reasonableness (common sense), that which is rational. It stands for the spoken and written word, putting in order, weighing and evaluating, the process of learning and skills.

Saturn

Saturn shows how we experience "reality", where we meet with resistance and discover our limitations. It represents the conscience and moral conviction, the laws and rules which we choose to obey. It also tells us about  our powers of endurance and the ability to concentrate, it lends qualities like earnestness, caution and reserve.

Neptune

This planet gives us the super-sensory, opens doors to mystical experience and the transcendental. On this level it is hard to discern where perception moves into deception, illusion and false appearances, and so Neptune is associated with all of these, with drugs and all kinds of pseudo-realities.

Sign Equivalent: Pisces ♓︎ | Period: 165 Years

Pluto

Pluto describes how we deal with power, personal and non-personal, be it through suffering the power of others or exercising it ourselves. It describes how we meet the demonic and magical, our regenerative powers and our capacity for radical change and rebirth: the cycles of dying and becoming.

In modern astrology, Chiron represents our core wounds and how we can overcome them. Chiron is named after a centaur Greek healer, philosopher, and teacher who, ironically, could not heal himself, and is symbolized by a key, demonstrating the importance of unlocking this minor planet's major lessons.
